Gerbera Daisy
August 28th, 2008The gerbera daisy is an annual that appears similar to the more common daisies. The Gerbera genus consists of a plant group of approximately 30 wild species, which are all very commonly used for decorative purposes. The gerbera daisies, which were discovered relatively recently in South Africa in 1884, were bred in England during late 19th century in order to enhance the characteristics of the plant that are attractive for ornamental and decorative purposes.
From there, the popularity of gerbera daisies grew as travelers brought home examples. The gerbera daisy now holds commercial significance as one of the most popular cut flowers. Today, the flower is cultivated for commercial purposes primarily in the Netherlands and in Colombia. Thousands of hybrids exist, and vary greatly in their size, shape, color and markings.
The gerbera daisy boast large flowers which are similar in appearance to sunflowers. They are available in a rainbow of striking colors from pure white to deep red. With their flowering heads so big and bright, the gerbera daisy is commonly associated with happiness and good cheer. As such, this flower makes an excellent choice for any gift basket intended to brighten someone's day, or celebrate joyous occasions.
Gerbera Daisy Meanings
The symbolic meaning that has been given to gerbera daisies is similar to the symbolic meaning that has been given to other daisies. The daisy has long been a symbol of beauty, purity, and innocence, and the gerbera daisy has also come to symbolize these human characteristics. However, because it also has such a large flowering head, with such a wide array of colors, it has also come to symbolize cheerfulness and happiness.
Because of its wide range of styles, colors and meanings, Gerberas are a terrific gift for a wide range of joyous occasions as birthday gifts to weddings, or as gifts intended to raise someone's spirit, such as get well gifts. The gerbera daisy is equally at home standing alone as the sole type of flower in a daisy bouquet, or as part of a large assortment of various cut flowers.
A single gerbera daisy, like a single rose, can be given as a gift itself, or along with a gift. So, however you decide to add a little color to your life and the lives of others, fresh gerbera flowers send a warm message no one would be unhappy to receive. To send such a message, you can order flowers online, or through your favorite FTD florist.
